Marking 25 years of inspiring visual literacy & creative expression.

When we began this journey in September 1999, we had no idea where it would lead us. We knew we wanted a platform to preserve Matthew’s voice, his love of film and his dream to be part of it. And it had to serve the population he so tragically left behind. The Matthew S. Hisiger Film Foundation, armed with its mission to provide high school students with resources, information, creative inspiration and financial support to learn about the film industry was immediately embraced by all who knew him. The hundreds of students who have participated in MSHFF’s programs during this quarter century constantly remind us that the vision from Matthew’s dream remains a tangible force. Our curriculum reinforces the deep need teens have to uncover and express their creativity and to study visual literacy in a safe and collaborative space. What they learn about themselves and filmmaking techniques transfers into any career. They are aware from their first day with us that they are now part of something larger than themselves; their personal expression carries Matthew forward creating a legacy we could have never predicted.

Read what some of our students from 2023-24 class have to say about their participation. These inspiring testimonials give you a snapshot of the depth and scope of our syllabus. There is no other program for high schooler’s quite like MSHFF. And, as many of you already know, we do not charge a fee to participate. A large part of our expenses is covered by donations from supporters like you.

BEN | UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS
RADIO, TV & FILM MAJOR

“The collaborative and informative nature of Matthew S. Hisiger Film Foundation’s Lab Series opened the door to a wonderful filmmaking experience which I am so grateful to have been part of. Our Teaching Artist, Betty Garcia, taught us the full scope of filmmaking in an experiential and hands-on way that truly brought it to life. Through that and the distinguished guest speakers and monthly movie screenings I was able to totally immerse myself in the filmmaking process. Inspired by the class and my passion for filmmaking I wanted a chance to intern at a studio. MSHFF & Betty connected me to an exciting placement at an independent film studio led by two award winning directors. There I gained knowledge about how to create ads, tv pilots documentaries and short films. This all set me up for success as I entered college Thank you!”

HANNAH | H.S. SOPHOMORE
INTEREST IN EDITING & SOUND DESIGN

“…I wanted to learn more about the entire filmmaking process. I took a general course in my high school but wanted a deeper understanding of editing and sound design. The way this class is structured enables each student to go through every step of the filmmaking process, so I was forced to do things that I normally would avoid because I wouldn’t feel comfortable. This experience gave me so much confidence as a filmmaker. I want to come back again next year!”

All students are welcome to attend the class throughout their high school career. We have had many along the way that have been involved for 2-3 years.

ANALYA | H.S. SENIOR
INTEREST IN SPECIAL EFFECTS & MAKEUP

“…This class taught me so much about the language of film and understanding the art and elements of film. How complex it is and the many backgrounds that goes into creating a film. I loved doing the Monster’s makeup for the film we did this year and also directing. Understanding the critical thinking that goes into directing, thinking about the lighting and the set design that affects each shot that you take. To be a good filmmaker you have to be a fast thinker and take into account other people’s thoughts & ideas.”

Check out ‘William’s Board’ our feature film from 2024 to see Analya’s work.

DAVID | H.S. Sophomore
CURIOUS FILMMAKER

“…I wanted to get a broader understanding of the filmmaking process. I think I might want to pursue film in some capacity and need to understand it more. This class expanded my knowledge about all the moving pieces that go into making a film. I learned so much about the importance of working with others, and how listening to their ideas is so critical to making a film.”

The yearly expenditure of delivering our 10-month program is approximately $40,000. This covers salaries and stipends, classroom rental, zoom/technical subscriptions, field trip expenses, scholarships/grants to students, insurance and the complete production budget for the annual original film the students make. We are deeply committed to continuing MSHFF and need your help to cover the increasing costs. Along with individual donations we welcome grants and corporate/business funding. If your place of business has a matching gift program, please consider adding MSHFF to their contribution list.
